When I first started the concept that would become Moments with Him, I knew that I wanted to include interspersed instrumental interludes (which is somewhat ironic since almost the entire project is instrumental – these just aren’t hymns.)
Anyway, I knew that these interludes would all be called “Interlude:” and then the name, such as Majestic. The exception would be this opening track, which would be called Prelude: From the Rising, and be characterized by an upward-moving motif on the piano, and that’s what I started writing. O Sacred Head, Now Wounded is a traditional German hymn written by Hans Leo Hassler. I’ve always loved the melody and chord structure of this song. It’s also stuck in my head for decades since I heard Paul Simon’s American Tune which borrows the melody for the beginning of it’s verse. Continue reading
In previous posts I had mentioned wishing I could get the Garritan Stradivari and Gofriller Cello instruments, but, alas, they are discontinued. There is hope that they will be resurrected and better with the upcoming Garritan Orchestral Strings 2. But, GOS2 is an unknown distance in the future, especially with current developments in Gary Garritan’s personal life, for which we all lift our thoughts and prayers. Continue reading
That’s right, it’s finally posted. I solved my little problem from the last post (dropping piano notes). It turns out that most DFD (direct from disk) streaming samplers have this same problem with off-line rendering. There is a setting you can switch to fix this. I haven’t checked to see if it plays back properly in real time, yet.
Anyway, for what it’s worth, here it is – piano and cello playing My Jesus, I Love Thee.
For the future, I’m working on several items at the same time – unfortunately only one having to do with my project. I’m currently arranging the strings on Father’s World. I’m also working on two songs for other people – one a young lady I’ve mentioned before. I had her and her sister over for a recording session several weekends ago, and still need to get in and comp together the performances.
I’m also working on a synth line for another friend’s song. I’m hearing a consort of recorders, a la Stairway to Heaven. I’m arranging them right now and we’ll see how it turns out.
Be Thou My Vision is an old hymn of Gaelic origin. There are at least two sets of lyrics floating around for it. One tends to be found in more traditional churches (i.e. Catholic or Presbyterian), and the other in more evangelical churches (i.e. Baptist). Believe it or not, I cannot find the Catholic lyrics that I grew up with. Continue reading
In an earlier post I described the concept for my new CD. As a quick recap, it will be made up of creative instrumental arrangements of traditional hymns with interspersed interludes. Most of the interludes are not beyond the concept stage, although one is now FINISHED. It has been posted on my Soundclick site, and you are welcome to take a listen. Continue reading
Okay, I couldn’t resist. The song has been posted:
